Integrated PLC Problems Solved!

Fauquier County Water and Sanitation Authority

Fauquier County Water and Sanitation Authority (FCWSA), founded in 1964, currently services nearly 11,000 customers across its water and wastewater service area. Located near northern VA and our nation’s capital, future exponential growth is expected.

Prior to 2013, the authority had monitored and managed its system in part through an integrated PLC-based SCADA platform. After switching between multiple integrated solutions in an effort to find a reliable service provider, FCWSA discovered and upgraded to Dorsett Controls as its new, permanent SCADA supplier.

“Dorsett provides the utmost quality in SCADA services! From personable sales representatives and project managers to technicians and customer support, all are just one call away. Dorsett is not trying to just sell you a product. They deliver a solution that is top quality and if at any time there is a question or issue, they are on top of it immediately. The product they are selling is yours… meaning you have full ownership to control, edit, or change anything as you see fit without the hassle of contracts and license fees. More than that, Dorsett provides top quality tech support for free, as well as 24-hour assistance if needed! All of these features give me peace of mind knowing that my system is top-notch and that if I need that assistance there are professional, knowledgeable engineers to back me up.”

FCWSA’s water department consists of 15 separate water systems including 140 miles of water line, multiple water treatment facilities, 48 operational wells, 12 storage tanks, and several booster pump stations. In 2019, FCWSA’s water department provided 46.9 million gallons of drinking water to its customers. FCWSA owns and manages three wastewater treatment facilities, 21 collection lift stations, and nearly 100 miles of wastewater infrastructure.

Greensville County Water and Sewer Authority

Greensville County Water and Sewer Authority (GCWSA), established in 1978, currently services nearly 7,000 customers with approximately 1,750 service connections. GCWSA also, in coordination with others, services Dominion Power’s $1.3 billion Greensville County Power Station. The facility powers 400,000 homes in Greensville and Brunswick Counties. This facility’s water demand is extensive, critical to operations, and has very little margin for error with respect to service interruptions.

GCWSA makes water through four surface water treatment facilities strategically located around the county. In recent years a 1 billion gallon raw water storage reservoir and three potable water pumping stations were constructed to help sustain demand.

In 2016, GCWSA began making considerable efforts to eliminate extended down times and a lack of system support caused by a functionally obsolete PLC-based system. The result of these efforts was a monumental and economical upgrade to the authority’s SCADA control system by selecting Dorsett Controls as its new provider.

Dorsett Controls currently services Three Creeks Wastewater Treatment Facility, Jarratt Water Treatment Facility, the authority’s water distribution system, and portions of the wastewater collections system. Additionally, GCWSA is currently installing Dorsett’s SCADA solution at the Skippers Wastewater Facility.

Dorsett Controls’ reliability, functionality, 24/7 support, and extremely low cost of ownership has allowed GCWSA to reduce its maintenance costs tremendously. The SCADA system that Dorsett built and delivered is a platform that Greensville County can build on for years to come.
